Moving Checklist Dubai: Tips for a Smooth Move

Moving in Dubai takes more planning than simply packing your belongings and booking a truck. Your building may have its own rules for move-in or move-out approvals, service-lift bookings, parking, and permitted moving hours. Utilities and internet also need to be arranged around your moving date, so leaving everything until the last minute can create avoidable delays.

This Dubai moving checklist covers the key things to do before, during, and after your move, from sorting your belongings and preparing your home to handling building requirements and settling into your new place.

Miss one of these and moving day gets stressful fast, not because you did something wrong, but because nobody told you these steps existed in the first place.

Before You Move

This stage covers everything that needs to happen while you still have time on your side, from setting a budget to getting your paperwork and utilities in order. Most of these steps take a few days to process, so starting early keeps moving day itself simple.

Set Your Moving Date and Budget

Get Quotes and Book a Survey

Get quotes from a few moving companies and book a home survey so the estimate is accurate.  A short in-person or video survey lets the movers see your furniture, your access points, and anything unusual like a piano or a large wardrobe.

If you own something like a piano, an aquarium, or original artwork, mention it to your mover early. These items need extra equipment and sometimes a second person on the crew.

Declutter Before Packing

Anything you’re not taking should go now, not get packed and unpacked for nothing. List furniture on Dubizzle, donate what’s still usable, and get rid of the rest. The less you move, the less it costs.

Plan Around Your Building's Moving Hours

Before choosing your moving date, check with building management for the permitted hours for moving activity. Some buildings set specific windows for loading, unloading, or noisy work, and these rules can change during Ramadan, public holidays, or other special periods.

Month-end moves can also be harder to schedule because more tenants may be moving around lease-expiry dates. Where your schedule allows, ask your building about less busy dates and confirm the approved moving hours before you book your crew.

Once you have the permitted window, give the exact date and time to your moving company so the crew can plan around your building’s requirements.

Apply for Your Building Permit

Check whether your building or community requires a move-in or move-out permit. Many managed communities do, and the process can vary by property.  Emaar, Nakheel, and DAMAC properties each manage this through their own portals, and approval usually takes one to three working days. Apply at least five to seven days before your move date so you’re not stuck waiting on the day itself.

Book the Service Lift and Loading Bay

Once you know your building’s permitted moving hours, reserve the service lift and loading area if your building requires them. Some properties use separate bookings for the lift, parking, or loading bay, so check with management rather than assuming your moving permit covers everything.

Ask about the available time slot, booking procedure, and any deposit or access fee before moving day. Keep the booking confirmation and share the approved time with your moving company so the crew and truck arrive within the allotted window.

Arrange DEWA and District Cooling

DEWA needs a move out request at your old address and a move in request at the new one, timed so power and water are on when you arrive. If your building uses district cooling, check the provider’s move-out process separately from DEWA. Cooling accounts can have their own notice, clearance, or final-bill requirements.  Make sure your DEWA account is properly closed or transferred so your final bill and security-deposit settlement can be completed.

Transfer Your Internet Connection

If you use internet through du or Etisalat, book the transfer now. It can take a few days to process, and nobody wants to arrive at an empty apartment with no wifi on night one.

Confirm Details With Your Movers

A few days out, confirm your date, time, and crew size with your movers so there are no surprises. If Quality Movers is handling your packing, the crew brings all materials with them.

Defrost your freezer

Defrost your freezer 24 to 48 hours before moving day to avoid leaks and odors in transit. Turn it off, remove all the food, and leave the door open so the ice melts naturally, catching the water with a towel or shallow pan underneath. Once it’s fully defrosted, wipe down the interior with a mild detergent or baking soda solution and dry it completely. This keeps the appliance and everything packed near it protected on the truck.

During the Move

This is moving day itself, from the last walkthrough of your old home to settling into the new one, along with what to pack separately and what timing to watch out for.

Do a Final Walkthrough

Before the movers leave your old home, walk through every room and check wardrobes, cupboards, the balcony, storeroom, and other easy-to-miss areas. Make sure nothing has been left behind, and take a few photos of the property after it has been cleared.

As the crew loads the last items, check your inventory and point out any fragile or unusual belongings that need special attention. Once everything is accounted for, you can focus on handing over the property.

Pack a Moving Day Essentials Bag

Keep a small essentials bag with you rather than in the truck. Pack your Emirates ID, a copy of your Ejari, your building permit paperwork, and passport copies together in one folder, since building security at your new place may ask to see the permit before letting the truck in. Alongside the documents, add chargers, any medication you take daily, a change of clothes, basic toiletries, water and snacks for the Dubai heat, and bed sheets with one set of kitchen basics so you’re covered for the first night.

Keep the Day Stress Free

Pick one person to be the point of contact for the crew, since several people giving different instructions slows things down and leads to mistakes. If you have kids or pets, set them up in one quiet room away from the loading and unloading, and pace yourself through the day since moving is physically tiring in Dubai’s heat even with professional movers doing the heavy lifting.

Complete the Handover and Check Your New Home

After the last items are loaded, complete any required handover steps for the old property and make sure the doors, windows, lights, and air conditioning are secured as needed.

At your new home, confirm that you can access the property and direct the movers to the correct rooms. Before the crew leaves, check your furniture and boxes for any visible damage and make a note of anything that needs to be reported

After You Move

Once the boxes are inside, a few tasks still need your attention. None of these are urgent on moving day itself, but they matter over the following days and weeks.

Update Ejari and Emirates ID

Cancel your Ejari for the old address and register a new one for your current home through Dubai Land Department. Update your address details with ICP within 30 days of the change. ICP’s data-update service covers address and other non-essential personal details.

Test Appliances and Report Damage

Collect your access cards and parking permits from the new building’s management office. Test your major appliances once everything is plugged in, and if something’s damaged from the move, report it to your movers right away rather than weeks later when it’s harder to sort out.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book movers in Dubai?

Two to four weeks works well for most local moves. This gives enough time for permits to clear and secures your preferred date, especially if you’re moving near month end.

Do I need a permit to move in or out of my building?

Most apartment buildings and gated communities in Dubai require one. These permits are managed by developers like Emaar, Nakheel, or DAMAC and usually take one to three working days to approve.

What happens if I forget to clear my District Cooling account?

Your provider, whether that’s Empower, Tabreed, or Emicool, keeps billing until the account is formally closed. This is one of the more common reasons tenants see deductions from their security deposit.

What should I keep with me instead of putting it on the truck?

Documents, cash, jewelry, medication, and anything you’ll need that same day. These all belong in your essentials bag, not in a box on the truck.

When is the best time to move in Dubai?

Mid- month and mid-week tend to be the calmest. Month-end gets busy fast since most leases end on the 30th, and Fridays come with prayer time restrictions in many buildings.

How long does a typical home move take in Dubai?

Most home relocations take between 4 and 8 hours, depending on the size of your home, the distance between locations, and how many items you’re moving.
